The Visitations of Essex by Raven in 1612 and by Owen and Lilly in 1634 both list a chart of the Reve family. This information was probably gathered from William's son Francis Reeve as he was the primary resident of Essex from this family which the chart focuses on. The chart shows William as the son of Thomas Reve of Colchester and Margaret. It has the following on William and Rose:
  • (1612) William Reve of Mollenden parke in com. Suffolke Gent. sonne and heire. (married) Rosse, daught. to Thomas Armyger of Canington in com. Suffolke (? com. Somerset) ar. wydow to William Bishope of Thistheldon Hall in com. Suffolke a lance Knight to Charles ye 5 Emperor.
  • (1634) Will'm Reve of Mollenden (Mowenden) Park co. Suff. gent. son & heir. (married) Rhose d. of Thomas Armiger of Canington com. Suff. (? com. Somerset) relict Will'm Bishop of Thisledon (Thistleton) hall com. Suff. a lance Knt. to Charles the fifth.

Note that the Visitations state that Rose was the widow of William Bishope. William and Rose were involved in a Chancery suit against Agnes West, mother of William Bishope concerning the "Manor of Thistledown Hall in Burgh (Burffe)."

The Visitations indicate that William and Rose had the following children:
  • George Reve of Mollenden/Mowenden Park
  • Robart Reve of Hormed parva Hartford, Clarke, later of Wrestlingworth, Bedford (1634)
  • Thomas Reve (Doctor of Divinity), d. bef 1613
  • Henry Reve (d. sp bef 1613)
  • William Reve (d. sp bef 1613)
  • Francis, b. c1561, resident of Hubberts Hall in Harlow, Essex
  • John Reve of London
  • Charles Reve of Mollenden/Mowenden Park, later of University of Cambridge (1634)
  • Elizabeth Reve, m. Thomas Payne of Charsfilde, Suffolk
  • Margarett Reve, m. Thomas Parker of Bery St. Edmond

These children are further substantiated by the information contained in the will of William's son Thomas who died after a sickness while attending Cambridge. In 1595 when the will was written, his father was deceased, but mother living and he asked that a preacher preach a sermon in which he remembered "William Reve my father and Rose Reve my mother (yf she be them deceased)." In addition, he mentions:
  • Robert Reve John Reve Henry Reve William Reve Charles Reve my brothers Margaret Reve and Mary Reve my sisters
  • Franncys Reve my brother
  • George Reve my brother
  • Thomas Parker my brother in lawe and Margaret my sister
  • Elizabeth Parker the daughter of Thoms Parker Apothecarye in Bury (possibly a niece)
  • Robert Reve my nephew fyve poundes unto Elizabeth Parker my neece and goddaughter tenne poundes unto Franncys Reve my godsonnne and nephew fyve poundes
  • Robert Reve the sonne of Robert Reve my brother
  • Franncys Reve the sonne of John Reve my brother (probably the same as "Franncys Reve my godsonnne and nephew")
  • George Reve the sonne of John Reve my brother

Note that Thomas's will asks that "yf I dye within tenne myles of Monedon my desire ys to be buryed there by the Sepulcher of my father." This indicates that William was buried at Monewden, St Mary's.

The book The Manors of Suffolk: The hundreds of Hoxne, Lackford, and Loes contains the following concerning the manor of Monewden in Suffolk:
By the end of Queen Elizabeth’s reign we find the manor vested in William Reve, son of Thomas Reve, alderman of Colchester, who had died in 1550. He resided at the hall, and by Rose his wife, daughter of Thomas Armiger, of Canewdon, co. Essex, and widow of William Bishop, of Thistleden Hall, in Burgh, had issue ten sons and five daughters. He died 27th Nov. 1567, and was buried in the parish church of Monewden, as was also Thomas his 4th son, Senior Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, who died 3rd Sept. 1595, in the 35th year of his age. William Reve was succeeded by his son and heir, George Reve, who married Anne, daughter of George Freake, of Wigton, co. Norfolk. In 1588 we meet with a fine of the manor by John Cordrey and others against Eustace Moone and others.
Though George Reve appears to have had two sons and two daughters - William, married to a daughter of one Payne, George, Rose, and Anne - and William was living in 1618, yet from George the father the manor appears to have passed to his brother Francis Reve, who resided at Hubbard’s Hall, Harlow, Essex, and married Joan, daughter of Richard, son of Sir Richard Josselin, K.B., and we meet with a line of it in 1597 levied by George Reve against him and others.

Research Notes

The Visitations indicate that William's father was Thomas Reve, Alderman of Colchester who died in 1550. It states Thomas's parents were Walter Reve of Longmelford in Suffolk, Gent. and a Ms. Hide. And that Walter's father was a John Reve of Long Melford, Suffolk, Gent. This needs further research to determine if this information is reliable.
