Narrative

The Visitations of Essex by Raven in 1612 and by Owen and Lilly in 1634 both list a chart of the Reve family. This information was probably gathered from Francis Reeve himself as he was the primary resident of Essex from this family which the chart focuses on. The chart shows him as the 4th son of William Reve and Rose Armiger of "Mollenden parke in com. Suffolke Gent." and contains the following:
  • (1612) Franncis Reve of Hubberts (Hubbards) hall in Harlow in Essex, 4th Sonne mar. Jonne daugh. to Rich. Josseline, Sonne to Rich. Kt of ye Bathe & hath no Issue.
  • (1634) Francis Reeve of Huberts-hall in Harlow co. Essex gent. aged about 73 years & hath lived with Joane his wife she being dau. of Richard Jocelin son & heire Sr Thom. Jocelin Knt. of the bath he & she are living ao 1634.

A 1614 Essex Session Roll indicates Francis Reeve was a surveyor for Harlow.

Francis wrote his will on 23 Dec 1639 and it was probated 3 Mar 1639/40. In it, he mentions:
  • my welbeloved wife (unnamed)
  • my nephew William Reeve of Monnden pk in Suffolk gent
  • my kindsman Charles Reeve my nephewe George Reeves sonne
  • my kinsman Francis Reeve my Godson sonne of George Reeve the younger
  • William Reeve of Writtle my kinsman
  • my said kinsman George Reeve the younger
  • my brother William Reeve
  • my brother Cales (Charles?)
  • my nephew Robert Reeve

In his will, he also specifies "my Boddie to be buried in the Church of Harlowe nere unto the pewe where I use to sitt." Heraldic rubbings and tracings from Harlow, Essex show "Francis Reve, died 1639."

It's not clear from the will exactly who would inherit Hubbard's Hall, his residence. However, this property was owned by Wiltshire Reeve, son of John Reeve of Harlow, in 1707 when he wrote his will. John Reeve presumably descends from one of Francis's brothers.
