SIMON REAVES, Adm'r.
A notice appeared in the Georgia Journal, 30 Oct 1821, that Mrs. Elizabeth Reaves, wife of Mr. Simon Reaves of Morgan Co., GA, had died on the 6th.
Simon mentions land that he appears to have owned in Washington County in his will. It appears likely therefore that he is the Simon Reeves who won some land in Wilkinson County, Georgia in the 1806 land lottery. He was denoted as of Washington County at the time.
Simon's will from 1821 names the above four children and that the sons at least were not "of age" yet. Mary appears to have been an invalid of some sort. In his will, Simon set aside an amount for "support of my unfortunate daughter Mary so long as she shall live and I particularly enjoin it on them to treat her with that filial tenderness and regard which her helpless and dependent situation may call for at their hands." She did not share in the rest of the division of the property.
The Morgan County Court recorded the following in its minutes for 1 Jan 1827:
Richard H. Randolph was this day appointed Guardian of John G. Rives and Thomas Rives orphans of Simon Rives Deceased who was duly qualified in open court
Furthermore on 6 Dec 1827, the minutes reveal that Richard H. Randolph was married to his daughter Eliza:
On the application of Richard H Randolph in right of his wife Eliza formerly Eliza Rives a legatee of the Estate of Simon Rives of this county deceased...
Simon appointed John Wingfield Jr. as his executor. His son John G. Rives's wife was a Sarah Ann Wingfield, perhaps a close relative of John Wingfield's.
Bibb County Probate & Guardianship Returns includes the following entry from 1850:
Recd of E A Nisbet Executor of Mrs E M Randolph decd one hundred & sixty two 50/100 Dollars, in full for one half the cost of constructing, cutting & putting up marble tomb stones over the graves of Simon & Elizabeth Rives & their son Thos Rives
5th Dec 1850
This of course indicates that the son Thomas had died by that point.
Research Notes
This very well may be Simon, son of Simon Rives from Brunswick County, Virginia. His brother Herbert mentions him in his 1794 Richland County, SC Will, so he was still living at that time.Sources
