From Reliques of the Rives:
William Rives, was born about 1737 in Brunswick county, Virginia, and removed from Virginia about 1770, settling in Camden District, South Carolina, where he died in 1783. That he enjoyed the highest social rank in Brunswick county, Va., and in Camden District, S. C, is plainly enough evidenced in his alliance through marriage with the Wyche family of Brunswick, and in the designation of himself in his will by the title of "Esquire."

On November 6, 1770, William Reves (Rives) obtained a patent for 200 acres between the Congaree and Wateree Rivers, in what was later to become Richland county, S. C, adjoining Felix Long, David Jackson, Henry Carter, and one Powell. On April 21, 1774, he patented a further 500 acres in that part of Craven county which was later incorporated in Richland county, S. C. Following his death his estate was paid on August 29, 1785, the sum of £34:2 for 2,088 pounds of pork furnished by him to the Revolutionary militia in 1780 (Salley, Stub Entries, p. 292).

Sons, wife Lucy, and brother Timothy are all named in his will. It's possible that Lucy married Gabriel Parker after William's death. In Parker's 1789 will, he bequeaths to his wife Lucy "all that part of my estate, which came to me by her Originally belonging to the Estate of William Rives, decd." Henry Rives was a witness to the will.

The will of Lucy Parker mentions "my four grandchildren, William Henry Rives, John Green Rives, Elizabeth Rachel Harrison and Silas Jesse Rives."

Although Reliques states his land from 1774 was incorporated in Richland County, his son Henry Rives appears to have sold the land in 1798, at the time located in Spartanburg County.

According to Brunswick County Order records William was appointed guardian for his sister-in-law Anne Wyche in 1765.

Research Notes

There was a William Reaves was elected to the SC House of Representatives from the District Between the Broad and Catawba Rivers on 1 Feb 1780. It's unclear who this was but may be William Rives. Another possibility is William Rives son of George Rives.
