The visitations of Dorset from 1623 indicate that John was of Randleston and lists him as the son and heir of Robert of Randleston. He also states he married Anna daughter of George Burley of Long Parish in "com. South." Concerning their children, the following information is given:
  • Georgius Rives de Randleston in com. Dorset fil. et haer (m.) Maria filia 1 Tho. Hussey de Tompson in com. Dorset Ar. (George Ryves of Randleston in County Dorset son and heir (m). Maria daughter of Thomas Hussey of Tompson in County Dorset ?)

The Alumni Oxoniensis has the following to say about John:
Ryves, John, of Dorset, gent Hart Hall, matric entry under date 2 May, 1581, aged 15; student of Middle Temple 1582, as son and heir of Robert, of Ranston, Dorset, gent; father of George 1605. See Foster's Inns of Court Reg.

From Middle Temple Records:
(1583/4) 15 Feb. Mr. John, son and heir of Robert Ryves of Randelstone, Dorset, gent., generally; fine 53s. 4d. Bound with Messrs. Richard Swayne and John Ryves. Mr. John Swaine, late of New Inn, gent., son and heir-apparent of Robert Swaine of Randelstone, Dorset, gent., generally; fine, 20s.

He does not seem to have sought further advancement in the legal profession and was fined in October 1601 for refusing to serve as a reader at the Middle Temple.

He had probably taken up residence at Downton prior to his election there as its MP in 1614. Once in the Commons, he appears to have made little contribution to the brief Addled Parliament.

Burials from Iwerne Courtney, Dorset Parish Registers:
  • Anne Rives the wife of Mr John Rives of Randelston was buried the xii day of Aprill 1609
  • John Ryves Esquire was buryed October ye 27th 1634

From Reliques of the Rives:
John Ryves, heir of Randleston, who was born 4 June 1567, according to the inq. p. m. (supra) of his father, was baptized at Ewerne Courtney 3 August 1567. He matriculated at Hart Hall, Oxford, 2 May 1581, "aged 15" (Foster), but apparently did not take his degree, as he proceeded to the Middle Temple where he was admitted 15 February 1582-3 as the "son and heir of Robert Ryves of Randleston, co. Dorset, gent." (Ingpen). He was made the executor of his brother, Robert Ryves, in 1596, and sold his estate at Lynch, in the Isle of Purbeck (inherited no doubt from his mother), 7 April 1624. His will is not extant but he would seem to have been the John Rives who was buried at Ewerne Courtney 27 October 1634. According to Hutchins, he married Ann Burley (buried at Ewerne Courtney 12 April 1609), daughter of George Burley, of Long Parish, co. Southampton, by whom he had: (see above).
