Baptism from Iwerne Courtney, Dorset Parish Registers:
  • Richard Ryves ye sonne of George Ryves Esq & Elizabeth his wyfe was Baptized September 23d 1635

Allegations for marriage licences issued from the Faculty office of the Archbishop of Canterbury at London includes the following, dated 30 Nov 1663:
  • Richard Ryves, of St Mary le Bow, London, Bachr, 28, & Rachel Northey, Spr, 21, dau. of William Northey, of St Stephen's, Coleman Street, sd City, Esq., who consents; at St Stephen's afsd, the Temple Church, or St Lawrence, Old Jewry, London.

The will of his father-in-law William "Guilielmi" Northey was dated 13 Sep 1683. Near the beginning of the will he mentions lands he owns which includes lands in London and Little Bursted, Essex "the same now are in the tenure or occupacion of Richard Reeves."

Richard wrote his will on 25 Jan 1701/2, describing himself as a merchant of London. He refers to "my Brother Sir Edward Northey" which positively identifies him since he is known to have married Edward Northey's sister. In his will, he desired to be buried at "St Mathew Friday Street by my wife." Unfortunately the early St Mathew Friday Street Registers don't appear to be extant. The will was probated on 2 Apr 1715 at which time Richard was described as "late of the parish St. Giles Cripplegate, London." Others in his will he mentions are:
  • my Eldest Son Tho: Ryves is possessed of a considerable reall Estate which he had from my Brother Geo: Ryves
  • my Daughter Druce
  • my Grand Daughter Anne Druce
  • my Son Richard Ryves
  • the four children that my son Richard hath, being named William, Richard, Elizabeth, and Henry
  • my Brother Sir Edward Northey
  • my Brother William Northey of Henkney and my cousin Thomas Haysome of London Merchant

Although Richard's will mentions two sons and a daughter, his brother Charles's will from 1692 mentions "my brother Richard's three sons." Perhaps one of the sons had died by the time Richard wrote his will in 1702.

From Reliques of the Rives:
Richard Ryves, born in 1635 at Ewerne Courtney, co. Dorset; living in 1692; became a resident of London. The evidence for him consists of Hutchins, who notes his baptism at Ewerne Courtney 23 September 1635, son of George Ryves of Randleston, and the mention of him in the will (1692) of his brother, 121. Charles Ryves. Hutchins records his marriage to a "sister of Sir Edward Northey, Attorney General" which is confirmed by the marriage license issued by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury at London, viz: "1663, Nov. 30, Richard Ryves of St. Mary le Bow, London, bachr, 28, and Rachel Northey, spinster, 21, daughter of Wm Northey of St. Stephen's Coleman St., said city, esq. who consents ; at St. Stephen's afsd., the Temple Church, or St. Lawrence, Old Jewry, London."
By her he had at least three sons according to the will (1692) of his brother, Charles, who mentions "my brother Richard's three sons," of whom but two are recorded by Hutchins: (see above).

Research Notes

Rachel Northey was the daughter of William Northey and Elizabeth Garrett.
