Narrative

Children of Simon Rumsey Reeve and Phebe Adams:
  1. John Reeve, b. 26 Dec 1765
  2. Phebe Reeve, b. 7 Jul 1768
  3. Simon Rumsey Reeve, b. 3 Jul 1770
  4. Elizabeth Reeve, b. 3 Jul 1770
  5. Simon Reeve, b. 18 Aug 1771
  6. Robert Reeve, b. aft 1775

In 1773, Simon Rumsey Reeve was of the city of New York when he and Nathaniel Platt bought some land. They sold some land in 1787. Simon's wife Elizabeth and Nathaniel's wife Phebe are named in the deed.

In 1778, Simon bought land in Tewkesbery, Hunterdon County, New Jersey from John Connet. Simon was living in Hopewell in Hunterdon County before he bought the land.

Simon sold a good bit of land in Clinton County, New York in 1788 while a resident of Hunterdown County, New Jersey.

Simon of Hunterdon County, New Jersey names wife Elizabeth, sons John and Robert, and brother-in-law John Addoms of New York in his will from 1793. The will was proven 18 Feb 1794. His identification of his brother-in-law allows us to identify Simon as the one who married Phebe Adams in New York, license dated 21 Nov 1764. The inventory of his estate describes him as Captain Simon Reeve.

A number of the births and baptisms of their children are recorded in the First Presbyterian, New York Church Records:
  • John, Son of Simon Reeves & Phebe Adams his Wife Born Decembr 26, 1765, Baptized Feby 27th, 1766¹
  • Phebe, Daughter of Simon Rumza Reeve and Phebe Adams his Wife, Born July 7th 1768.²
  • Simon Rumsey Reeves & Elizabeth Reeves, Children of Simon Rumsey Reeves & Phebe Adams his Wife, Born July 3, 1770.³
  • Simon, Son of Simon Rumsay Reeve & Phebee Adams his Wife, Born Augt 18th, 1771⁴

The Revolutionary War Pension Record of John Addoms of New York contains a family Bible with the following entry:
  • Robbert Reeve and Mary Addoms were married 12th of Novr 1797

Simon and Phebe are apparently buried in Lamington Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lamington, Somerset County, New Jersey. Pictures of headstones are unreadable.

In a 1796 deed, the "children and heirs at law of Benjamin Clark late of the Township of Trenton in the County of Hunterdon" sold some land to Daniel Clark Sr. Among these were "Elizabeth Reeves widow and Relict of Simon R Reeve late Elizabeth Clark John Reeve and Anne his wife late Anne Clark." This would appear to be Elizabeth, the second wife of this Simon. It's possible, but unlikely that this could concern this son Simon. It's unclear if the John Reeve mentioned is Simon's son John or possibly a brother or another individual.

Research Notes

Previous genealogies have suggested a connection to Rumsey Reeve who moved from Connecticut to Ohio.
