Narrative

Adelaide Reeves is the seventh of ten known children of Charles Reeves and his wife Sophia nee ROBINS. She was baptised at the Parish Church of St Martin, Charlton Abbots, Gloucestershire during September 1833.

On the 1841 census taken on 6 June, Adelaide appears as a member of her mother's household at Colehay in the parish of Charlton Abbots. She was eight years old and was born within the county (Gloucestershire).

At the time of the 1851 census, on 30 March, Adelaide is living on High Street, Winchcombe, where she is a servant in the household of Thomas NEWMAN and his wife Mary (nee FISHER). She is 18 years old and unmarried, claims birth in Charlton Abbots, Gloucestershire and is employed as a House Maid. Her younger sister Eliza was also in domestic service and also living on High Street, Winchcombe.

Adelaide has yet to be identified on the 1861 census. However it is suspected she may be in the Lambeth area of Surrey. Her sister Eliza was working in that area and Adelaide was to be married there the following year.

FreeBMD notes the marriage of Adelaide REEVES and Richard EAVES during the second quarter of 1862 in the Lambeth Registration District.
The known children of Richard EAVES and Adelaide (nee REEVES) are
  1. Jane Eaves, b.reg. 1862
  2. Adelaide Sophia Eaves, b.reg. 1864
  3. Eliza Mary Eaves, b.reg. 1866 and d.reg. 1867
  4. Mary Eliza Eaves, b.reg. 1868
  5. Emma Cecilia Eaves, b.reg. 1869
  6. William Reeves Eaves, b.reg. 1872
  7. Richard John Eaves, b.reg. 1874
  8. Herbert Robins Eaves, b.reg. 1877
The birth of each of their children was registered in the Hanwell Registration District in Middlesex and on each occasion the mother's maiden name is recorded as REEVES.

On the 1871 census, Richard and Adelaide are living on Boston Road, Hanwell, Middlesex. She is 38 years old and her place of birth is recorded as Chalton (sic Charlton) Abbots, Gloucestershire. Her occupation is given as Shop Keeper. As well as their four surviving children, Mary Ann ROWLAND, age 17 and born Winchcombe is living with the family. Her relationship to the Head of Household is given as Niece. See Research Note 1 below.

At the time of the 1881 census, Richard and Adelaide plus their family have relocated to Windsor Street in the Toxteth Park neighbourhood of Liverpool, Lancashire. Given the birth of their son Herbert was registered in the fourth quarter of 1877 in Hanwell, Middlesex, they could have only been in Lancashire for a couple of years, at the most at the time of this census. She is now recorded as being 47 years old and was born in Charlton (Abbots omitted), Gloucestershire. All seven surviving children are living at home with their parents

On the 1891 census, Adelaide and Richard are living on Granby Street, still in the Toxteth Park are of Liverpool. She is 58 years old and was born in Charlton Abbots, Gloucestershire. It would seem they have a family Dying and Cleaning business, with husband Richard noted as the employer and Adelaide plus the two eldset children still at home all employed in the same trade.

Adelaide's husband Richard died prior to the 1901 census, on which is is both Head of Household and a Widow. See Research Note 2 below. Adelaide plus her daughters Adelaide Sophia and Emma Cecilia are living on Granby Street in the West Derby neighbour of Liverpool. She is 69 years old and "living on (her) own means"

Adelaide has not been identified on the 1911 census and it is most likely that hers is the death recorded in the GRO Index to Deaths during the second quarter of 1909 in the West Derby Registration District. She was 75 years old, which matches our subject. Find-a-Grave notes she is buried in the Toxteth Park Cemetery, Liverpool.

Research Notes

(1) On the 1871 census Mary Ann ROWLAND's relationship to the Head of Household is given as Niece. Since HoH Richard EAVES was born in Lancashire, it is much more likely Mary Ann is Adelaide's niece. This is borne out by the GRO Birth Registration for Mary Ann during the first quarter of 1854 in the Winchcomb Registration District of Gloucestershire which gives her mother's maiden name as REEVES. This probable family relationship has not been researched further (as of Feb2020).

(2) The GRO Index to Deaths includes an entry for Richard EAVES during the third qurater of 1894 in the Toxteth Park Registration District. He was 64 years old.
