Narrative
Little is currently known about this Charles Reeves, except for his appearance on the 1841 census. He appears in what is assumed to be the household of his parent's George and Mary Reeves in the parish of Romsey Extra, Hampshire. He was seven years old and was born in county (Hampshire). He was the second of four children in the household at that time. A baptism has not been identified for this individual in the HGS Index. See Research Note 1 below. It is possible he is the same individual as Charles Reeves who was first identified on the 1851 census as a servant in Totton, Hampshire but aside from a share connection to Romsey and a similar birth year, there are currently no solid facts to claim these are the same individual. It is possible our subject is an adopted nephew, step-child &c.
Research Notes
(1) The HGS Index to Baptisms notes two individuals named Charles Reeves baptised in 1834.(1a) Charles Reeves, the son of John Reeves and Mary was baptised at Sherfield English in April 1834. He has been identified on the 1841 census at Sherfield English.
(1b) Charles Reeves, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Reeves was baptised at South Stoneham, Hampshire in September 1834. He has been identified on both the 1841 census and also on the 1851 census in his parent's household at West End, Hampshire
The baptism of a Charles Reeves in Hampshire prior to 1834 was in 1823 in Warnford, which is north and east of Southampton and after 1834 was in 1839 in Penton Mewsey, which is close to Andover.
There are only three baptism for a Charles Reeves with a second given name between 1814 and 1840 and none are a possible match for our subject.
(2) It is possible that Charles was not our subject's formal (baptismal) name, but simply the forename by which he had come to be known by at the time of the 1841 census. The baptism of his supposed siblings Charlotte in June 1826, Rebecca in May 1831, Henry in April 1839 and William in July 1843 all took place at Romsey. However there is not baptism in Romsey for a son of George & Mary under any other name(s) which would fit this individual. Charles is not alone; a baptism for his probable sister Eliza around 1837 has yet to be identified.
