James may have had the middle name William. His marriage record lists him has James William Quarles.

James and Elizabeth were said to be of Wilson County, Tennessee in two Franklin County, Virginia deeds from 1814 and 1816. James had a survey for 235 acres in Wilson County in 1811 among Tennessee land registers and several more in following years.

The will of James Quarles names his wife Elizabeth, eldest son David Quarles, his second son's son, John B. Quarles (grandson), two eldest daughters Ann Maria Quarles and Sarah W? Quarles; and other children Alexander R. Quarles, Samuel O. Quarles, Milton Winston Quarles, James Madison Quarles and Eliza Ann Quarles.

From Wilson County Will Book 1824-1827, p230:
Elizabeth Quarles Guardian for Eliza Ann Quarles one of the minor heirs of James Quarles decd, Reports to the Worshipful County Court of Wilson now in session at their Decr Term 1825 The following account of her guardianship for said Eliza Ann Quarles from the year 1817 to the 26th December 1825 for hire of negroes & rents of land she has recd.

In a deed from 1830, "John Word and Elizabeth his wife formerly Elizabeth Quarles William Williams in right of his late wife Jane formerly Jane Quarles of the County of Wilson and State of Tennessee Benjamin Clayton and his wife Locky formerly Locky Quarles Smith Shewett and his wife Polly formerly Polly Quarles and Peter R Vaughn and his wife Lucy formerly Lucy Quarles of the County of Rutherford and State aforesaid all heirs at law of James Quarles deceased" deeded to James P Merritt "a certain tract or parcel of land allotted to the said James Quarles deceased in a division of a portion of a tract of land own by Roger Quarles deceased his father situate in the County of Wilson."

In a Chancery Notice published in the Tri-Weekly Nashville Union, 29 Apr 1837, on a case of Benjamin D. Hynds vs. George W. & Wm. Quarles Admr &c, Samuel O. Milton, W. & J. M. Quarles, it states that "Samuel O. Quarles has left this state privately, and was insolvent; that since he left, his mother, Elizabeth Quarles, has died and left him the third part of two negroes, worth $1000 or $1200, and personal estate worth about $400; that William and Geo. W. Quarles are administrators of said Elizabeth Quarles.."

The inventory of the estate of Elizabeth Quarles was taken 15 Oct 1835 and the sale of property was dated 20 Oct 1835.
