- Jhone/Joan Ryves
John "Ryve" of Bransbury in Barton Stacey, Hampshire wrote his will on the first of the month (missing) in 1558. It was proved on 7 Nov 1558. He mentions:
- my sonne Richard Rive
- Robert my sonne
- my sonne William
- my dawghter Margery Rive
- my dawghter Jhone
- sonne Jhon Ryve
- harry Rive harry ? ? of Barton Sacy Also I make ??seeer to see this last testament pformed and putt in execution harry Rive Willm Teringe? the yoger
- Jho my sonne shall fine meate and drinke to Jhon Wilsherd
The statement mentioning "harry Rive" appears muddled because of missing text.
There is an inventory in the record in addition to the will which has the following introduction:
An Inventary of all and singular the goods and catalls late of John Ryve thelder of bransburye deceased praised the xviiith? daye of October in the yere of or Lorde god 1558 by Edmond Salmon Nicholas Smithe harry Rive and Willia heringe"
From Reliques of the Rives:
There was another family of Ryves in England which descended from John Ryves, of Barton Stacy, co. Hampshire, who apparently was originally of Dorset and may very probably have been a brother of Robert Ryves (ca. 1490-1551), of Dorset.
In the British Museum there is a pedigree of this family (Harleian Mss. vol. 581, 2 22, fol. 169) endorsed, "to Mr. Nicholas his man named Parny in Mr. Eveling's office in the chancery the whole descent of Rives of Dorset & Hampshire." To this pedigree I have made some additions from original and published sources of information.
John Ryves was a (Fee) Farmer of Bransbury & Collector of rents at Barton Stacey (in 1555). Will proved 7th November 1558.
Research notes
Childs suggests that this John Ryves may have been the brother of Robert Ryves. This is unlikely although John may have been Robert's nephew. John's father (also John) would be a far more likely candidate to have been Robert's sibling.Sources
