Note that the Salmon Records seem to give approximate dates for the children's deaths.
Joshua is listed in the Southold 1776 census right before a Widow Elizabeth. He had two males under 16 and one female under 16 in addition to himself and his presumed wife in the household. This likely indicates there was another son and daughter not accounted for in the above list.
There is a second marriage for a Joshua Reeve in the Salmon Records:
- 178(1 or 2) Mar 28 Joshua Reeve & mary Salmon
This marriage is also recorded in Mattituck Presbyterian Church Records:
- Joshua Reeve | Mary Salmon | Mar 28, 1781
It would appear the second wife Mary was buried in Southold Pres per the cemetery transcription:
- Reeve, Mary, wife of Joshua Reeve; died, October 13, 1819; in her 79th year ?
Mary Reeve of Southold, widow of Joshua Reeve, was given administration on his estate on 22 Jul 1784.
A partition deed from 1788 lists heirs of Joshua as: Joshua (son), Mehitable, Mary and Joseph. All four of these are believed to be children. Given that both Joshua and Joseph are heirs, this indicates that this Joshua was indeed married twice and was the father of Joseph. The daughters Mehitable and Mary were likely children of the second wife Mary Salmon.
Mary Reeve appears as a head of household in 1790 with two men over 16 (would include Joshua), one under 16 (Joseph), and three females total (presumably Mary HOH, Mehitable, and Mary).
In 1800, she was head of household in Southold with one male 10-16 (probably Joseph although age is a few years off), a female 16-26 and herself over 45. Joshua Reeve is listed as a head of household on the same census sheet.
