Ann REEVES is the third of seven known children of Edward Reeves and his wife Fanny (nee CROOK). Her birth was registered during the first quarter of 1859 in the Southampton Registration District and the GRO Index to Births confirms her mother's maiden name was Crook. She was presented for baptism by her parents Edward and Fanny at the Parish Church of St Mary, Southampton on 17 April 1859. Her oldest sister Mary was baptised at the same time, when her sister's name was recorded as Mary Enna (sic) REEVES.

On the 1861 census Ann REEVES appears in the household of her parents Edward and Fanny REEVES. They are living at 66 Melbourne Street in the St Mary’s area of Southampton. Ann is two years old and was born in Southampton, Hampshire. Her sisters Mary (age 6, born Southampton) and Matilda (4, Southampton) along with three unrelated lodgers complete the household.

The death of Ann's mother Fanny REEVES was registered during the first quarter of 1870 when Ann was about ten or eleven years old.

On the 1871 census, Annie (sic) is the only other member of her, now widowed, father's household at 22 Longcroft Street, Southampton. Her four younger siblings are inmates in the Poorhouse on St Mary's Street, Southampton. She is twelve years old and was born in Southampton, but there is no occupation recorded for her (Scholar expected). Her uncle Samuel Reeves and family are neighbours at 21 Longcroft Street. Her two older sisters were living away from home, working as Domestic Servants.

At the time of the 1881 census, Ann is again to be found in her widowed father Edward's household now at 23 Longcroft Street (Had they moved or had the houses simply been re-numbered?)
She is now 22 years old, unmarried and is consistent in claiming she was born in Southampton. Again, there is no occupation shown for her and it likely she and her brother Edward's wife Elizabeth A Reeves (nee ELLERY) are looking after the household. As well as her brother Edward's plus his wife Elizabeth and their five month old son Edward H Reeves three younger brothers Frank H REEVES, Henry REEVES and William REEVES are living with her. Her youngest brother William is only 11 years old and is still a Scholar. Her uncle Samuel REEVES remains a neighbour at 21 Longcroft Street and the parents of her sister-in-law Elizabeth (nee ELLERY) are neighbours at 22 Longcroft Street.

On the 1891 census, Ann is still living at 23 Longcroft Street along with her widowed father Edward REEVES who remains the head of household. She is now 32 years old, remains single and again claims birth in Southampton. For the third time there is no occupation shown for her. In addition to her father your younger brother Frank and her niece Annie REEVES, the daughter of her sister Matilda who married her cousin Samuel REEVES and who are living with her uncle Samuel who is still living at 21 Longcroft Street.

The death of Ann's father Edward REEVES was recorded during the third quarter of 1899 in Southampton Registration Distinct.

Ann has not been identified on the 1901 or 1911 census returns. It is possible she married between 1891 and 1901, but there are no obvious marriage registrations in the Southampton area in this period which would match our subject. See Research Note 1 below.

It is highly probable Ann predeceased her father Edward REEVES. The GRO Index notes the death of Annie (sic) REEVES during the fourth quarter of 1898 in the Southampton Registration District. She was 39 years old, which makes this a strong match to our subject but this is only known instance where her name has been recorded as Annie rather than Ann.

Research Notes

(1) FreeBMD has only a single marriage entry for Ann* Reeve* between 1891 and 1901 in the New Forest, South Stoneham or Southampton Registration Districts. That is for Annie Louisa REEVES in South Stoneham Registration District during 1q1900 and she married Henry Arthur JONES. Annie Louisa's father was John REEVES and John is named in the 1851 census of his father Benjamin REEVES at West End in Hampshire.

In the following decade (1901-1911) FreeBMD notes a further three marriages, but all can be accounted for and are not our subject.

• During 4q1903 Annie Louisa REEVES married Charles McStocker in the New Forest Registration District. She was the daughter of Samuel REEVES and his wife Eliza (nee TRAPP)).
• During 2q1906 Annie REEVES married her cousin George Henry REEVES in the Southampton Registration District.
• During 4q1909 Annie Eliza REEVES married Percy Walter HAMMERTON. Annie Eliza's father was Walter Edward REEVES and his father was Walter REEVES who is named on the 1851 census in the household of his father John REEVES.
