Narrative
James is the seventh known child of Israel REEVES and his first wife Elizabeth MARTIN. He was baptised at the Parish Church of All Saints, Fawley, Hampshire on 12 January 1787.
The marriage on 9 October 1809 of James REAVES and Anne BARNES is recorded in the register of the Parish Church of All Saints, Dibden, Hampshire
Known children of James & Ann Reeves:-
- Reeves, Rose, bapt. 18 March 1810, Dibden, Hampshire
- Reeves, Elizabeth, bapt 16 Feb 1812, Fawley, Hampshire . Married Isaac PRINCE in 1833
- Reeves, Ann, bapt. 7 Nov 1813, Dibden, Hampshire. Married Charles OSMAN in 1834
- Reeves, Israel, bapt. 31 Dec 1815, Dibden, Hampshire
- Reeves, Jane, bapt. 21 Dec 1817, Dibden, Hampshire
- Reeves, Honoria, bapt. 30 Apr 1820, Bramshaw, Hampshire (parents are 'of Eling').
- Reeves, Louisa, bapt. 28 May 1822, Bramshaw, Hampshire. Married William EGERTON in 1842
- Reeves, Sarah, bapt. 2 May 1824, Bramshaw, Hampshire. Married Robert LINCH in 1845.
- Reeves, James, bapt. 19 Feb 1826, Bramshaw, Hampshire (parents are 'of Eling').
In February 1812, when their daughter Elizabeth was baptised at Fawley, the parish register notes it was a private baptism and that Ann's maiden name was BARNES
He appears in the 1841 Census at Cadnam, and described himself as 'of Cadnam' in his will made in 1841. While a number of his children are baptised at Bramshaw two of the entries indicate that the parents were 'of Eling'. Eling Parish came up to Cadnam at this time, but Cadnam itself formed a tithing of Minstead Parish.
The 1841 Census entry records James age "50" with four of his children (Jane "20", Louisa "15", Sarah "15" and James, 14 - ages in speech marks indicate a rounded age from the 1841 Census), James the son occurs as an executor in his father's will alongside Charles Osman who James the father describes as his son in law (Charles Osman married Ann Reeves, 26 Aug 1834, Mottisfont, Hampshire) which accounts for the presence in the 1841 census of Sarah Osman, age 4.
James' widow Ann appears as Head of Household on the 1851 census.
While the 1841 Census rounded age of 50 ties in nicely with his year of birth c.1787, the GRO index for his death records 66 which gives a birth year of c1782. It may be that 60 was misread as 66, for 60 gives a birth year of 1788 which is reasonably accurate.
Research Notes
(1) It is possible this is the same individual as Reeves_James_1997 who hadAs of December 2020, this page and the former page for James_1997 have been merged and this page retained.
(2) Israel Reeves the son not tied in at present (RPR).
As of December 2020, whilst we lack information to directly tie the son Israel Reeves to this couple, in the absence of any other R*v*(s) couple named James and Ann(e) baptising children in the parishes around Fawley, which at this time included Hythe, Dibden, Eling, which at this time included Marchwood and Copythorne/North Eling, it is presumed that Israel is indeed the son of this couple.
(3) Daughter Ann REEVES and Charles OSMAN were witnesses to the marriage of daughter Elizabeth Reeves to Isaac PRINCE in 1833 at Downton, Wiltshire.
