From Reliques of the Rives:
Edmund Ryves matriculated at St. Mary Hall, Oxford, 27 November 1581, aged 17, as "of Hants, pleb" (Foster). According to the Harleian Mss. he married Mary, daugh ter of John Nicholas, Gentleman, which is confirmed by a letter written 27 April 1640 by John Nicholas, signed "your assured loving father," and addressed "to Edward Nicholas, Esq." (Sir Edward Nicholas, Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Admiralty) in which reference is made "to your sister Ryves" (State Papers Dom. Charles I, vol. 451, 60).
