Edmund Ryves of Drayton in Hampshire wrote his will on 8 Mar 1631/2 and it was proved 7 Nov 1632. In addition to wife Mary, he mentions children John, Susan, Edmund, Matthew, and Jane. He also mentions his uncle "Mr. Augustyne Ryves," his father-in-law John Nicholas, brother in law Dr. Matthew Nicholas and brother-in-law George Thomas.
From Reliques of the Rives:
Edmund Ryves matriculated at St. Mary Hall, Oxford, 27 November 1581, aged 17, as "of Hants, pleb" (Foster). According to the Harleian Mss. he married Mary, daughter of John Nicholas, Gentleman, which is confirmed by a letter written 27 April 1640 by John Nicholas, signed "your assured loving father," and addressed "to Edward Nicholas, Esq." (Sir Edward Nicholas, Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Admiralty) in which reference is made "to your sister Ryves" (State Papers Dom. Charles I, vol. 451, 60).
Research Notes
Reliques of the Rives incorrectly identifies Edmund as the son of John Ryves. However, the Visitations of Hampshire make clear he was actually his grandson. This is also verified by the reference in his will to Mr. Augustyne Ryves as his uncle rather than as his brother. Additionally, the Edmund who matriculated at Oxford in 1581 must be this Edmund's uncle by the same name.Sources
