The will of Jeremiah Reeve, dated 19 May 1693 names the following in his will:

  • grandchildren, children of my son in law Jonathan Reeve and his wife Elizabeth, and my son in law John Banes and Ellen his wife
  • my daughter Jane
  • daughter Sarah Lawsell
  • son-in-law John Ager, his wife Abigail
  • my cousin Joseph Reeve

Jeremie Reeve was buried 23 May 1693 at Bocking, Essex.

From the Exchequer depositions taken 21 Apr 1726:
  • To the second interry this Deponent saith that he did knowe Jeremiah Reeve in this Interry inquired after in his life time and that he dyed upwards of thirty years ago and that at the time of his death he left six children vizt John Reeve his onely son Sarah the wife of this Deponent Jane Reeve Elizabeth Reeve Hellen the wife of John Baines and Abigail the wife of John Ager (John Kettle of Stisted)

Given that the daughter Eleanor Baynes's children were born in the 1690s according to their baptisms and were of age to be in the court case in the 1720s, this matches well with Eleanor daughter of Jeremiah baptized at Bocking on 26 Nov 1664. There are a number of other possible matches for baptisms of Jeremiah's children and a marriage previous to many of the children's baptisms. Not all of these should be assumed to be his children as not all of them are clearly mentioned in the Bocking register:
  • William the sonn of Jerymy Reve was byryd ye 25 of August 1657 (possible son)
  • Jeremiah Reeve singellman and Rachell Bigg singell woman were maried the 25 day of October (1659)
  • Sarah the daughter of Jeremie Reeve was borne the 4 day of September (1660)
  • John the son of Jeremie Reve Jur baptized March 14 (1661/2)
  • Elizabeth the Daughter of Jeremiah Reve Bapt Octob the 30 (1662)
  • Susanna Reeve & Elanor Reeve Daughters of Jeremiah Reeve were baptised 26 (Nov 1664)
  • Robert the son of Jeremie Reeve was bapt 1 (Nov 1666)
  • James the son of Jeremie Reve was bu 4 (Apr 1667)
  • Robert the son of Jeremie Reve was bu 29 (Jun 1667)
  • Jonathan son of Jeremie Reeve 12 (Aug 1669) (burial)

Research Notes

This may be the son of John Reeve of Bocking who wrote his will in early 1659. He mentions "Jeremy Reeve my son," "Jeremy Reeve son of Jeremy Reeve my son," and "Sara, Abigail, Mary, and Jane Reeve, daughters of my son Jeremy." This agrees well with this Jeremy's list of children: Jeremy, John, Sarah, Jane, Elizabeth, Abigail and Eleanor. Eleanor is surely the one baptized 26 Nov 1664. This then could imply that she was one of the younger children and that Jeremy/Jeremiah, Sara, Abigail, Mary and Jane mentioned in the will were born before 1659. The will does indicate that all these daughters were under 21, thus born after 1637. That's five children total who were born before 1659. So at minimum the eldest, presumably Sarah or Jeremy were born before 1655, and probably earlier. However, most of the children of this Jeremiah seem to be accounted for in the Bocking parish records (see entries above) with births/baptisms all in the 1660s. So it appears there could be two Jeremy/Jeremiahs with similar sets of children. This needs further evidence to clarify the situation.

This appears to be Jeremiah Reeve of Bocking who in 1667 made a complaint in Chancery against Edward Lawsell. Jeremiah had leased some land in Bocking and Stisted to one William Wiseman who had Edward Lawsell as tenant. He was claiming that according to some of the agreements, Lawsell was in unlawful possession of the property and was selling timber and destroying property and he desired to prevent him from causing further damage.
