Narrative

Children of Theophilus Hampton and Mary Reeve:
  1. Theophilus Hampton
  2. George Hampton, b. c1663

From Gosfield, St Catherine, Essex Parish Register:
  • Maria filia Jeremia Reeve et Judithia ...baptizata ye die Juli... (1624)

The will of her brother Jeremiah Reeve mentions "my sister hampton" to whom he gave forty shillings. Mary Hampton of Great Warley who was buried there in 1681 appears to be this sister. In her will, overseership is granted to "William Burton of London Gent & my Cozn Jno Reeve of Childerditch Gent." William Burton was the husband of Mary's niece Rebecca Reeve and John Reeve of Childerditch was nephew to Mary and sister to Rebecca Reeve. This provides strong evidence that Mary Hampton was this Mary Reeve.

Her will mentions sons Theophilus and George Hampton.

From Allegations for marriage licences: issued by the Vicar-General of the Archbishop of Canterbury:
  • (1660) Sep. 10 Theophilus Hampton, of Horndon West, Essex, Gardener, Widr, abt 40, & Mary Smith, of the same, Wid., abt 38; at the par. church of St. Grace, Lond, or West Horndon, afsd.

In the parish register of West Horndon, the burials don't appear to be listed between 1652 and 1663, at least in the usual format. But under the 1652 entires, there are a series of undated entries in a different hand. One of them is "John Smith of Field Rouse was Buried." Underneath this entry the name "Reeve" is written with no further details. This might possibly be her first husband.

From Shenfield, St Mary the Virgin, Essex Parish Register:
  • George son of Theophilus Hampton & Mary his wife was baptized May ye 23d (1663)

From Great Warley, St Mary the Virgin, Essex Parish Register:
  • March 1st 1680, then was buried Mary Hampton widow, 4th Affidavit recd } signed by Mr Jno Willis parson of Ingrave (1681)
