Reeves, John

Summary

Father: probably John Reeves
Mother:

Birth: 15 Dec 1738
Birth Source: Family Bible

Death: 5 Apr 1815
Death Source: Headstone

Spouse1: Mary Culver

Narrative

Children of John Reeves and Mary Culver:
  1. John Reeves, Jr., b. 6 Dec 1765
  2. Thomas Reeves, b. 5 Nov 1768
  3. Jesse Reeves, b. 6 Sept 1771
  4. Edward Reeves, b. 19 Jul 1773
  5. Gabriel Reeves, b. 29 Aug 1777
  6. William Reeves, b. 19 Apr 1782

Mary was born 14 Jun 1741. Mary Reeves is named as a daughter in the will of Jesse Culver of Southampton, written 9 Jul 1782.

Given the numbers in the household, this must be John Reeves, Jur. listed in the 1776 census. John was under 50, with four boys under 16 and his wife in the household. Assuming the designation "Jur" is specifying his father, not just his generation, this would make him the son of an older John Reeves, son of John Reeves (d. 1753) of Southampton.

John appears in Southampton in the 1790 census.

John appears on the 1800 census in Southampton next to his son Edward Reeves.

Research Notes

The Family Bible which is the source of the above dates seems to imply that John was a son of John Reeves of Southampton and his wife Rachel. If that's the case, his father would have been 65 when he was born. It's therefore more likely this was a grandson of John.

This may be the nephew John Reeves mentioned in the will of Stephen Reeves of Southampton.
