Malachi Reeves deeded land to William Reeves on August 3, 1785.
He was listed in the 1784-87 census of Granville County with 3 Males 21-60, 4 Males under 21 or above 60, and 5 Females.
William Reeves was a taxpayer in Tabb's Creek District, Granville County, 1788. In August of that year, he and Joseph Hays are added to the hands of Avery Parham to oversee the Bankes Road in Granville County.
He is listed in the 1789 Granville Tax list in Tabb's Creek District along with Hardy and Frederick Reeves. The 1790 "census" for Granville County, North Carolina comes from tax information actually recorded in 1788. For this reason, it is possible for the same individual to be listed on this Granville census listing and in other locations where the data is from actual 1790 records as well.
By 1800, William Reeves, his sons Hardy and Wiley along with his brothers Frederick, Abner and Allen are recorded in the census of York County, South Carolina.
Research Notes
This William Reeves has been believed to be William Reeves, Jr., son of William who died in Granville NC in 1751; however, it is unrealistic to conclude that based upon current documentation. William Reeves, Jr. witnessed a Bertie County NC deed from Ralph Mason to William Reeves circa 1728/29. The required age to witness a deed was 14, accordingly William Reeves, Jr. would have been born before 1714. Therefore if he was the individual who died in 1821 in York SC he would have been well past 100 years old. Additionally, in the 1782 tax lists of the Fishing Creek District of Granville County, Malachi Reeves is noted as "Aged" or over 60, whereas William Reeves is not. It is far more likely that a generation has been missed and the William Reeves with wife Elizabeth who died in York, South Carolina was the son or nephew of William Reeves, Jr., born circa 1710. The bulk of the documentation regarding him indicates that he was the son of Malachi Reeves. William Reeves, Jr. described as "of Edgecombe County" deeded land to Malachi in 1753 which appears to be the last transaction that definitely pertains to him in Granville County.Malachi Reeves is listed with 3 tithes in 1755 in Granville County - himself, William and the negro Jackson. Again in the 1762 tax lists of the Fishing Creek District, sons William and Jonathan are listed with Malachi
The following record probably pertains to William, the son of Malachi. It is unlikely that it could be William, son of James Reeves, since he was listed as a tithe of James Reeves on the 1768 tax lists of Rowan County:
- William Reeves received pay for 12 days service in the Granville County Militia, Colonel Robert Harris, March 24, 1769.
