Narrative

Children of Elisha Reeve and Temperance Reeve:
  1. Elisha Reeve, b. 30 Oct 1782
  2. Abigail Reeve, b. 24 Nov 1783
  3. Martin Luther Reeve, b. 28 May 1785
  4. John Calvin Reeve, b. 1 Oct 1788
  5. Temperance Reeve, b. 7 Jun 1796

This Elisha was formerly thought to be the son of Elijah Reeve. However, analysis of census and other records indicate that Elisha, son of Elijah, was of Deerpark and Mamakating while this Elisha moved to Wallkill and remained there.

The Goshen First Pres Church Record lists Elisha's marriage to Temperance:
  • (1781) Dec 27 Elisha Reeve & Temperance Reeve

Baptisms are listed in the church records as follows:
  • (1796) Aug 28 Temperance Born June 7 1796 Daughter of Elisha Reeve & Temperance Reeve his wife
  • (1789) Jan 23 John Calvin son of Elisha Reeve & Temperance Reeve his Wife Born Octr 1 1788
  • (1786) Oct 8 Martin Luther Son of Elisha Reeve & Temperance his Wife, Born 28th May 1785
  • (1784) Aug 29 Abigail Daughter of Elisha Reeves Born Novr 24 1783
  • (1783) March 30 Elisha, son of Elisha & Temperance Reeve, born Octr 30th 1782

Elijah Reeve wrote his will in 1789, naming his daughters as follows: "Mary Tucker, Keturah Newkirk, Rebekah Moore, Tempora Reeve, Abigail Seybolt, Bettsie Bull." The fact that his daughter "Tempora" is surnamed Reeve in his will and that his daughter Abigail was married at Goshen First Pres indicates that Elisha's wife Temperance was the daughter of Elijah. Which shows further that it was the other Elisha of Deerpark who was the son of Elijah.

Elisha is on the tax lists from Wall Kill, Orange County from 1799-1802.

This Elisha and Eaton Smith sold land back and forth in 1810 and 1811. In 1816, Elisha Reeve of Wallkill sold some land in Wallkill to his sons Elisha Reeve Jr. and John C. Reeve of the same place. This clearly establishes Elisha was still of Wallkill in 1816. In 1819, Elisha & Elizabeth and John C & Mary of Wallkill sold some land to the Seybolts. In 1826, Elisha of Wallkhill sold land to Elisha Jr. of Calhoun, in Orange County. In 1828, Henry B. Weiner, the administrator of John C. Reeve sold some land to Elisha Reeve Jr. of Calhoun. These deeds reinforce the relationships and connection to Wallkill rather than Deerpark.

Research Notes

This Elisha who married Temperance Reeve was formerly confused with Elisha son of Elijah Reeve. Analysis of census and other records have served to distinguish the two. This was probably Elisha Reeve of Wallkill who had a pension application for service in the Revolutionary War. The pension application from Dec 1832 or 1834 stated that he was aged 83 years last February (so b. c1749-c1751). He was called into service at Goshen. It additionally states he was born at Southold Suffolk County Long Island in 1750. This is about ten years off from the range for either Elisha's birth according to the census but most likely refers to this Elisha.
