Narrative
Children of David Reeves and Hannah:- Charlotte Reeves, b. 25 Feb 1770
- Appollos Reeves, b. 2 Sep 1771
- David Reeves, b. 29 Apr 1779
David testified of his own birth date, his wife's birth date, their marriage date and children's birth dates in the Southampton town records.
This is likely the David Reeves (Reave, and Reeve) listed in the Suffolk County Militia in 1759, 1760 and 1761. He is listed variously as a laborer and cobbler.
In 1776, he was living in Southampton West in Suffolk County, listed between a John Reeves (perhaps a brother) a Stephen Reeves Jr. This Stephen was probably named Jr to distinguish him from an older Stephen Reeves. This older Stephen mentions David Reeves in his 1789 will and also mentions "my Nephew John Reeves." These would appear to be the David and John living next to each other in the 1776 census. This makes it likely John and David were grandsons of John Reeves and Rachel Foster.
In 1790, David is listed next to a Stephen Reeves Junr and a Stephen Reeves next to Stephen Jr. Since the eldest Stephen had died in 1789, this would appear to be Stephen Reeves and his son Stephen.
David continued to reside in Southampton. In 1800, he was listed beside a Thomas Reeves and a John Reeves on the other side of Thomas. A Stephen Reeves is on the same page. In 1810, was not far from John "Reve" and Thomas "Reve" (listed next to each other) and Stephen Reves in the opposite direction, but all on the same page. In 1820, David "Reve," "David Reve" Jr. Thomas "Reve", and John "Reve" are all listed sequentially.
In 1830, the elder David disappears and his son David appears to be the one listed in Brookhaven that year.
This therefore appears to be the David whose death is recorded at Southampton Parish Church. The year section is unclear, but is around 1822:
- (1822?) September 22nd - David Reeves
Research Notes
John Reeves, possibly brother, whom he was listed nearby, was probably John Reeves. His wife Hannah was formerly thought to be the one listed in the 1830 census in Southampton. However, that was the widow of Stephen Reeves.
